Discussion Questions

  1. Read aloud I Cor. 2:14. The ESV and NKJV translates this verse “the natural person.” The Greek word here is psuchikos from where we derive the words psyche and psychology (the study of the human soul). What does it mean to be a “soulish person?”
  2. Read aloud Eph. 2:1, 4-5. What kind of death is this passage describing? If you are a Christian, what were the pre-gospel resources you formerly turned to for finding meaning, comfort, and hope in crisis?
  3. PC preached about how the soul seeks gratification through the body. The soul, which consists of the mind, emotions, and will may take a sense of emptiness or pain and try to use the body to fill or smother that feeling. Can you share any examples of how you’ve seen this in your life or in others?
  4. Read aloud I Cor. 3:1-3. Why does the apostle Paul address the believers in Corinth as “people of the flesh” (KJV: carnal; NIV: worldly) and as “infants in Christ?”
  5. Consider Pastor Benjamin Robinson’s definition of the flesh: “The flesh is the realm of self. I lean on my own understanding and live by my own resources and power. The flesh is my independence from God and the state in which I renounce my dependency on him, refusing to see God’s perspective on my situation. It’s about taking matters into my own hands. ” What are some ways in which you’ve recently struggled with being in the flesh?
  6. Read aloud Romans 8:5-16. What are the characteristics of a person whose mind is set on the flesh?
  7. According to Hebrews 4:12 and John 6:63, what two things are mentioned as being effective in cutting away the believer from the flesh and setting him/her free from walking in a soulish manner?
