Membership Class – Teaching Guide

The Membership Class should take about 3 hours to teach. Depending on how you do it, you can give people a 45 minute break to eat in the middle. Often times the meal is provided by the church and should be allocated in your budget. Also it is good to keep in mind that people will want a 5 minute break for every hour of lecture.

Font that is in blue are fill in the blank sentences that appear in the packet.

5 mins (0:05) [1]

As people take their seats, have them read through the Message from the Lead Pastors on their own. Then call out each person’s name and take attendance if you haven’t done so already.

10 mins (0:35)

Have everyone read Eph. 2:19 aloud together. Then read through the page and tell people to fill in the blanks. It’s also good to call on people to read certain paragraphs aloud. If it’s a big group, be sure to pass around a wireless mic so everyone can follow along.

Big Idea: Drive it home that the church is a family and a family cannot consist of self-proclaimed members.

The church is a visible manifestation of a body of believers in a local area.

The Greek word oikeios means a household or family.

And in any family, it’s important to know who’s in and who’s not.

Speak briefly about our vision. Then read through each core value’s paragraph. I’m going to refrain from listing the blanks that correspond to the core values, trusting that you know them by heart.

Big Idea: New Philly is not a generic, cookie-cutter church. We have a unique vision and non-negotiables (core values) that keep each of our ministries reflecting specific attributes of God’s kingdom.

To raise up an army of mighty warriors who will go out in the anointing of the Holy Spirit…

You don’t have to stop and say something about each core value, the paragraph usually suffices. Good things to share are testimonies or pointing out practical aspects of our ministry that reflect that core value.

Optional: In Seoul, we cut up the core values onto neatly laminated cards (one word per card) and then we play a game where each team unscrambles the core values and displays them in order. The first team to do so wins (a reward should be prepared). If you play this game, be sure to allocate an additional 20 minutes.

Read aloud the Brief Overview paragraph and then encourage everyone to read through the items in their own time.

15 mins (1:17)

Even if you have not been with New Philly from the very beginning, don’t point that out. Teach our history with confidence. Be sure to highlight the history items that appear on the membership quiz (see quiz).

New Philly Membership Class - Page 8 Page 8 – Benefits and Responsibilities
20 mins (1:37)

Read through each paragraph remembering to fill in the blanks when prompted. Choose 2 or 3 Bible verses from the page and have everyone read aloud together. When a pastor has not taken time to prepare this section, they have a tendency to repeat what’s already been read aloud. Please avoid this as it is quite irksome.

Big Idea: Membership has many blessings but with it, responsibilities.

Covering: It places you under the spiritual leadership, care, and protection of godly leaders.

Identity: It identifies you as a genuine believer…

Growth: It provides you with support and encouragement for steadfast growth…

New Philly Membership Class - Page 9 Page 9 – Attendance and Tithing
12 mins (1:49)

This page looks long but it moves quickly. Each item must be read aloud so people get a practical idea of how we keep people accountable in attendance and tithes.

Big Idea: Two practical responsibilities of membership are Sunday service attendance and tithing. At New Philly, we keep people accountable to these things.

What happens if I fail to email the Attendance Admin about my absence? Have everyone cross out Community Care Pastor (CCP) and put “CG1” instead.

What happens if I continually forget to notify the Attendance Admin about my absences? Have everyone cross out CCP and put “campus pastor” instead.

What if I continually fail to tithe? Have everyone cross out CCP and put “campus pastor” instead.

Read through the items on the bottom of the page (i.e. Core Leaders, Board of Trustees). Keep it simple and move on.

7 mins (1:57)

This page gives people an idea of what church discipline is and what it looks like. Be sure to read aloud the “examples of open and blatant sin” listed on the bottom.

Big Idea: People get kicked out of churches and people have gotten kicked out of New Philly. Here are the three major issues that would require excommunication.

New Philly Membership Class - Page 12 Page 12 – How Do I Become a Member?
3 mins (2:00)

Have everyone read through these four steps. Don’t talk about the actual Community Connection process, the next page covers it. Also don’t turn to the membership covenant, we will review that last.

New Philly Membership Class - Page 13 Page 13 – Community Connection
4 mins (2:04)

This page covers the Community Connection process. Be sure to read through it so everyone is on the same page.

When you’ve reached this point, you’ve covered the main portion of the membership class. It’s time to review the membership covenant and administer the quiz. Pages 14-19 are pages that are meant to be read alone.

Encourage people to read through this page on their own (as campus pastors, be sure you read through this page periodically and submit revisions as needed for the next edition of the membership class).

Encourage people to read through this page on their own. Tell them that it contains guidelines for how we handle altar ministry and prophecy. This may be very different from people who have a background with YWAM or Vineyard.

Encourage people to read through this page on their own. Tell them it’s not optional and that our pastors will assume they have read through this.

Encourage people to read through this page on their own. In the past, we’ve had guys cause the sisters of our church to feel unsafe through stalking or sexual harassment. This is a good page to reference when such cases arise.

Read aloud the membership covenant and explain that this is the covenant that will be offered to whoever completes the Community Connection process (explained on page 13).

Then give everyone 5 minutes to review the membership packet and get ready for the quiz. Tell them that the quiz is simply our way of discerning if new member candidates listened and are ready to make a meaningful commitment. While they are reviewing, give out copies of the quiz (download here: quiz version 2.0, this must be printed/copied ahead of time). Once review time is over, give them 5-7 minutes to complete the quiz. Then have them mark the quiz of a nearby neighbor as you review the answers.

Explain the following before they take the quiz: For native English speakers, passing grade is 70. For non-native speakers, 65. If someone fails the quiz, one re-take is offered at the following week’s Sunday Swim (bonus points do not count on the retake).

The last step in the membership class is giving out the New Member Candidate Profile (download here: candidate profile version 1.5, this must be printed/copied ahead of time). Hand out a copy to everyone and give them time to fill it out (for those who desire to proceed with membership). For those who need more time to think about it, they can have one week.

For those who fill out the form and submit it, tell them that a New Philly leader will contact them in the next few days to start the Community Connection process.
