A Steward of Blessedness

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. – Matthew 5:5

μακαρισμὸς (makarismos): Greek for regarding as happy, blessed, or enviable. It is the condition of receiving eternal benefits from God.

Makarismos Church is the name of the church pastored by Pastor Tandi Randa. Pastor Tandi is an anointed missionary to West Papua, Indonesia who is networked with Native Partners for World Mission (NPWM), and also serves as the director of Love Papua Training Center (LPTC). When I think about Pastor Tandi and Makarismos Church, my heart comes into full agreement with the name of his church. The word, makarismos, is used in Romans 4 regarding the blessedness of Abraham by grace and not by works. Abraham is known as the father of our faith because he simply believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness. God makes a crucial promise to Abraham: “And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” (Genesis 12:2-3). This blessedness was for the purpose of being a blessing to the nations: blessed to be a blessing.

Meeting Pastor Tandi and having quality time with him was one of the highlights of my trip to West Papua. I got the privilege of experiencing 10 days of pure glory with an amazing team of 12 firebrands. Six were from Seoul and six were from Sydney, Australia. Praise the living God for all the powerful services, leadership training seminars, anointed prayer gatherings, fire-filled youth gatherings, and more! And as much as I am amazed and humbled at being a part of all of these things, what I will remember the most will be the shepherd’s heart and leadership of Pastor Tandi. I absolutely loved sitting in between Pastor Paul Yoo, our team preacher, and Pastor Tandi and chatting with them. All I could think about was how I was so challenged and inspired by both of their genuine shepherd’s hearts. As a new and young intern pastor, I had much to glean and much to learn. I was challenged and convicted to know that when it comes to discipleship and leadership, it is imperative to have is a true shepherds heart- to be one who is willing to lay down his life for his sheep (John 10:15). More than gifting, anointing, talent, or charisma, I walk away from this trip longing for a true and sincere shepherd’s heart.

When I think of Pastor Tandi, I think of a man who manifests the beatitudes in Matthew 5. And out of all the beatitudes, the one I believe that Pastor Tandi manifests the most is the third: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” This is what came to mind after I got to know him over a couple of days. Interestingly enough, the beatitudes all characterize a life of blessedness! When I see Pastor Tandi, I see a man of God who is calm, humble, and composed like a lamb, but also bold as a lion within. He is indeed meek, led by the Spirit of God, a man of obedience, and a Kingdom-minded warrior. His meekness is shown by the fruit: “…for they shall inherit the earth”.

It is obvious that favor chases down Pastor Tandi wherever he goes. He is a man who stewards favor well. I believe that God trusts him, and that these blessings will not overcome him to become his master. Indeed, Jesus is his treasure. I feel that Abba delights in giving him favor. Matthew 23:12 says, “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Pastor Tandi is not one who has exalted himself. Rather I believe that God has positioned and exalted him because of his humility, because of him being poor in spirit, pure in heart, and being one who hungers and thirsts for righteousness. Over the years, Pastor Tandi has been faithful in the small things, and is now in a place of stewarding much for God’s glory.

I am filled with awe when I reflect on the stories of how God networked and provided beyond expectations for Pastor Tandi and his family. God has connected him to not only NPWM and New Philadelphia Church, but also with a spiritual mother by the name of Suzette Hattingh, who served with Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke under a ministry called “Christ for all Nations” (CFAN). She is now the director of a missions organization called “Voice In The City.” Through his spiritual mother, Pastor Tandi has been blessed with kingdom financiers and full-time intercessors to support him and his ministry. Not only has God given him 3 Love Papua Training Centers, but the Lord has also provided a committed staff from all different areas of Indonesia. God has truly orchestrated and set up these things, providing both “hardware” and “software” for LPTC. But what humbles me the most is when Pastor Tandi communicated to me that more than fruitfulness in ministry, and more than even LPTC thriving, he desires to simply shepherd and focus on his sheep in Makarismos Church. What rocked me the most was not anything profound. It was simply his sincere, authentic, fatherly heart towards his people. As I move forward with being the Emmaus Campus Director at Seoul National University and also with my intern pastor position, I look forward to God shaping my heart to be one like His: the Good Shepherd willing to lay down His life for His sheep.

Please continue to pray for Pastor Tandi, Makarismos Church, the ministry at Love Papua Center, and the entire region of West Papua. I don’t see many dry bones. I don’t even see many corpses. I see an army filled with the breath of God. Please pray that God would continue to pour out His anointing and His Spirit upon the beautiful Church of West Papua. Pray that the sincerity and authenticity of the faith of the believers would continue to remain unadulterated. Pray that Makarismos Church would continue to grow in fruitfulness and manifest the beatitudes of Matthew 5. Pray that as God continues to give more and more talents to Pastor Tandi, and that he would steward the favor and blessings with joy, humility, and increased faith.

Pastor Tandi expressed his desire for Makarismos Church to be a missional and sending church. I am confident that God’s favor and blessing is upon Pastor Tandi and Makarismos Church. I could only imagine the cries of Pastor Tandi’s heart to his Father regarding his sheep. I am excited and expectant to see God take him and his church from glory to glory. I am confident that the blessedness that the Beatitudes speaks of will only increase in his heart and in the hearts of his sheep at Makarismos. Indeed, much like Abraham, Pastor Tandi and Makarismos Church is blessed to be a blessing.
