2015 Jakarta – Hans Christian Benvenuto

Blessed to Be a Blessing

Hi everyone! My name is Hans Christian Benvenuto. I recently came back from my weeklong missions trip to Jakarta, Indonesia. I want to share my testimony as God has really blessed and empowered me and my team through our ministry in this city. This is my very first missions trip. At first I didn’t want to sign up because I was so scared. But God moved me, and I finally signed up after I said “no” to Him many times. Now that I have completed this missions assignment, I realize that if I hadn’t gone on this trip, I would still be the same old Hans who had never seen himself as a perfect creation of God. In this testimony, I would like to share how God reminded me that HE is truly blessed when He sees us blessing others.

We were mainly ministering at IKAT, but also at some small local churches, public schools where the majority of students are Muslims, and a mental disability center just outside of Jakarta. Our team was so blessed as we were given opportunities to share powerful testimonies, teach seminars, lead praise and worship, and preach the word of God. Sister Donna, Sister Farida and Sister Gaby were our main contacts from IKAT, a Bible school in Jakarta. We also had the privilege to minister with a powerful man of God named Pastor Tarigan who was ready to help the team with translation. Pastor Tarigan has been serving God for more than 40 years, and I was personally blessed when I listened to his testimony as he faced many trials and persecutions for his faith during his 40 years of ministry- not only in Indonesia, but in many other countries.

There were a couple of significant moments during this missions trip where I felt God speak to me. The first was on our second day of ministry at IKAT. Our team preacher, John, was sharing that God had created us in His own image, and that we are perfect. What he was sharing hit me directly, because for a long time I would never see myself as God’s creation. I would always just see weaknesses and flaws. But now I know that those negative thoughts were just Satan throwing lies at me. Now I also know that our God doesn’t make mistakes! He has created me perfectly in His own image. Genesis 1:27, “So God created man in his own image…”

On the 4th day of ministry, our team had to teach seminars separately to the male and female students of IKAT Bible college. At the men’s seminar, each one of us had to teach one topic that Pastor John picked for each of us. I got to teach a seminar about “Boldness and Confidence.” In the morning when Pastor John told me which topic I had to teach, I was really scared. I didn’t know if I could teach about confidence to students when I didn’t have much confidence in myself. But Pastor John gave me a verse to meditate on, which was 2 Timothy 1:7. Right after I read the verse, I prayed over my seminar preparation. During this time, I felt like God reminded me that the fear was not real, as He has put so much boldness in me. It was just that I was too scared to “use” it. Through this process of revelation, I was really blessed during my preparation and also when I taught this seminar in front of the students. 2 Timothy 1:7, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”

One last memory that really blessed and empowered me in the field was when the Lord was calling me to bless and encourage others. On the 3rd day, we ministered at KGPM church. There I was given a chance to share my testimony on how I always worried about my future, but how now I walk in peace and totally trust in God. I shared about my past and also my dreams. After the service finished, one of the sisters from IKAT, Sister Olivia, told me that she was so encouraged by my testimony. It turned out that she had been dealing with the same struggles, and she had been keeping them to herself because she didn’t know what to do. She said through my testimony, she was really encouraged. I told her that I am truly blessed that my testimony can be a source of encouragement for her. As I shared this moment to the team during our evening debrief , Pastor John reminded us all that it’s not only us who are blessed when we bless others, but Our Father in Heaven is also blessed.
Matthew 5:16: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
