This bonus sermon is an addendum to the 4 part sermon series on the letter to the Philippians. It challenges Christians to deal with circumstances of lack or feelings of lack differently than what comes automatically. It also covers the issue of unanswered prayer.

Discussion Questions

CG questions written by Christian Lee.

  1. When the apostle Paul wrote Philippians, what three things did he lack? How did he respond to his hardships (see Phil 1:12-14, 1:15-18)?
  2. Can you share an experience in which you felt lack or a circumstance where you felt God was withholding something from you? Perhaps he didn’t answer your prayer. Please include how you felt and how you dealt with it.
  3. PC mentioned that there was someone else whose prayer went unanswered in Matthew 26. When our prayers go unanswered or we face trials or hardships, we often fight temptations of feeling forgotten, abandoned, or anxious/fearful. How can applying the gospel help train us to fight these temptations? How would this be important in a post-tribulation pre-millennial end times scenario?
  4. According to 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, what prayer did Paul lift up that went unanswered? Why did God refuse Paul’s petition? What was God’s purpose in withholding it?
  5. God can have various purposes for holding something back from us. How can your resolve to do God’s work (and to do it with joy) despite limited resources or feelings of inadequacy magnify God’s glory?
  • Bonus sharing: For those who are preparing their hearts for the retreat, share with the group the ways you are consecrating yourself to focus more on God and to stir expectancy/faith for the retreat.
  • Homework: Memorize 2 Corinthians 12:9.
